The best way to describe this is to select a series of cells in a column in Excel and apply a style or font effect. The effect is, essentially, the same. You can use it to apply different formatting to different columns.

It's strange w3schools says col and colgroup are supported by all browsers but I couldn't get either of them to work in Firefox or Safari. What's the consensus? Should we or shouldn't we be using these tags?

w3schools is your friend. A good example and demo to try out how it works -> http://www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_colgroup.asp

Out of interest (I've never heard of colgroup) I had a look at testing that tag on w3schools, and the colgroup tag doesn't even seem to function. Anyone else found this?

I'm using Firefox 3.5.2, Mac.

"None of the Mozilla-based browsers implement COLGROUP and COL as per html 4.01 specs"

Make sure that any styling you use with this tag is not essential to your website working!
