I'm very interested in web-design and I'm looking for books that will give me a good foundation in the topic. What do you recommend?

Here are a couple of books that will put you on the right path.

  1. Head First HTML with CSS & XHTML
  2. Build Your Own Website the Right Way Using HTML & CSS
  3. Eric Meyer on CSS
  4. The Principles of Beautiful Web Design
  5. Learning Web Design: A Beginner's Guide to (X)HTML, StyleSheets, and Web Graphics

Also, you can't overlook good online tutorials, javascript, and graphic design, but you should start with the basics of the trade.

Do you have a graphic design background? If not, I'd highly recommend The non-designer's web book. It's an easy read but really useful!
