I'm thinking of migrating my blog to tumblr - i built the current iteration in a custom django app, but i'm finding it too much hassle to add features / maintain.

I like tumblr, it seems easily extensible, and they let you do custom domain mapping.. which i want.

So i guess my question is, has anyone got experience (particularly negative) using tumblr that they can share?

Alright. Get ready to read quite a bit, because I know a lot about this subject. Since you did not state which blogging platform you are already using, I will just state the upside and downside of Tumblr, and you can compare it to your current platform.

I love tumblr, it is fantastic.

Not only is it easy to publish (whether you're publishing on your computer, via text message, email, iPhone app.. they have it covered) but also it creates a sense of community around your blog.

After a while you will gather followers and have real conversations.

The only negative I can think of is that you do not have a backup copy of your blog. Whilst I trust the guys at tumblr completely, it does help to have peace of mind - there is a website that can help you backup your tumblelog.

Tumblr is great for sharing stuff you like, but I guess it's far away to consider it as a real alternative for a professional blog. I use Tumblr almost everyday, but I still got my blog at WordPress.
