i need something like ecommerce but without the buy part. i want to have a page full of thumbnails of bikes and then when you click on one of the thumbnails it takes you to a description of that product. I dont want to have to manually put each thumbnail up and then make a page for it so what can i do? any programs that do this? the description page is not gonna let them buy that product, just see a picture of it and tell stuff about it.

In that case, it's simply a product catalog. eCommerce typically (not always) has these components:

  • Product catalog (for browsing, searching and view product details)
  • Shopping cart (well.. for shopping)
  • Payment (Payment or request for quotation etc)

If it's just product catalog and the product range is small (say less than 20), a lot of such sites just use content pages to display the product listing and details.

Anything more, you might want to consider using a CMS framework. I've also seen many using blog engines to showcase their products. You can consider Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal etc.

One step further will be to use frameworks which have catalog or eCommerce module/plugin support. Drupal's Ubercart, Joomla's ShoppingCart extension etc are some of them. You can disable the shopping cart/payment options to just showcase the products without shopping carting and payment.

What you want is a simple 'Product Catalog' -- still database driven content, but without additional e commerce functionality.

If you're totally new to web development, you might want to make life easy on yourself and start out by getting a self-hosted installation of WordPress setup. It takes literally only minutes, has a vast amount of plugins you can search through and find something to your liking, and can be themed to your liking.

Check it out: http://wordpress.org/

And the WP Extend Plugin directory here: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/

And the WP Extend Themes directory here: http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/

All free and open-source, but there are those who develop Commercial products and themes for WordPress as well. It's VERY well support and used by millions.

  • WordPress can be used for many puposes. It is a very flexible content management system used for easily managing all kinds of information. Blogs or "Posts", Website document or "Pages", Photos, Video and Media, RSS Feeds, and just about anything else you can think of that is done on a website these days. There is documentation and living conversations, guides and tutorials to do just about anything you would ever need to do via WordPress solutions. Gary Hepting almost 7 years ago
