I want a horizontal scrollbar to appear on my page when the window is made too small to contain the text.

How do I do this?

I already tried <body scroll="auto"> and also overflow:scroll on the style of the body; and likewise for the html element. This does not work, however.

The page is Hebrew, but that is not what makes the difference -- plenty of Hebrew pages have auto scrollbars.

This occurs on both Chrome and IE, so it is not browser-specific.

You have the doctype commented out, so that IE is in Quirksmode. When i manually switch to IE8-Standadsmode, the horizontal scrollbar appears.

  • Yes, that was it. Actually, there was a doctype, but it was transitional, which triggered quirks mode. Changing to the doctype for standards type produced the scrollbar. I still don't know why the near-identical English page had a scrollbar even with the 'transitional' doctype, but that's just for interest's sake. JoshuaFox about 8 years ago
