I have a red background and I have 4 links and their buttons. What color should they be and what color should the box that they're in be?

The whole idea is about how you want to theme your color usage on the site/page.
Red itself as a background can match with a few other colors depending on:
- Shade of the red
- Tone desired
- Alignment with the nature of the site and content
