Web typography is still a bit of a grey area unfortunately. For displaying non-web safe fonts you have several options:

Use standard image-replacement to replace the standard text on the web page with an image showing the fancy text. This is by far the quickest, easiest and most compatible method at the moment but does have its drawbacks such as not being able to select the text

sIFR - similar to image replacement but instead of replacing the text with images you use flash. This is slightly more complex than standard image replacement, and means that both flash and javascript need to be available/enabled on the client. But it is very accessible and I think with the latest version the text is selectable

@font-face - with this technique the font file is put on the server and is therefore available if the visitor doesn't have it installed on their computer. This is easy to set up but as it is CSS3 it is only supported by firefox and safari (and therefore chrome). It doesn't work at all in IE and it can be quite slow. There are also a lot of issues around font licensing.

Cufon - Cufon is similar to sIFR except that it is a pure javaScript solution. I prefer it over sIFR as it relies on one less technology to work, it is very cross browser compatible and is usually quite fast.

You can't just put the font on your web server, you need to embed it with some clever trickery.

Assuming the font is licensed for embedding you could use Cufon:

  • Thanks 2426. I think Cufon is a great way to display the font in any kind of browser or platform. I have followed the description and i now have a JScript file for the "La Carte" font. What do i do next to implement it on my text? Sincere Regards rodney oleshin over 8 years ago
