Maintaining CSS sprites can (will) be a hassle once your team consist of several developers and designers, and the site has regular design tweaks.

Do you have any best practices and advice on how to make this easier?

You could work with separate files and use a sprite generator such as Project Fondue's CSS Sprite Generator.

Depending on the situation I bet you could build a web service that handles collaborative sprites, with a CMS like Drupal.
