Which browser do you develop in? If you use Firefox, get the Firebug extension, then get the YSlow extension and that will tell you exactly what to do to optimise your pages :D

If you don't use Firefox, start using Firefox, then repeat the above steps ;)

Also, you might want to look at a lazy-load plugin which will only load the blocks of content that are visible when the page loads - i.e. 'above the fold' - additonal content lower down the page is not loaded until the visitor scrolls down the page.

You could also use Google Page Speed with Firebug.

Here are some quick tips:

  • Minimize the number of page requests. Most browsers can only handle two http requests at a time. This is one reason why CSS sprites are a good idea (putting several site images into one).
  • Put your JavaScript includes at the bottom of the page if possible. Loading JavaScript blocks everything else on your page from loading, including HTML.
  • Put stylesheets at the top. This will help the page load progressively.
  • Compress and gzip CSS and JavaScript. This helps reduce filesize and increases transfer speeds. A great tool for this is http://code.google.com/closure/

Yahoo and Google are great resources for this type of thing.
