I chose Fireworks because it allows for easier object selection and it can open both Fireworks files and PSD's.
It's flaky on Mac OSX though - two major bugs that are extremely annoying.
- randomly exports the wrong image
- opening new files in application frame tabs breaks - it's a weird, weird bug that FW can't replicate, but it has happened to me again after 6 months of it all being fine on a fresh SL install.
If you're on Windows, choose FW for the best of both worlds, if you're on a Mac, get Photoshop for reliability.
If you can afford it buy the suite.
- Thanks for reply. I'm on Windows. So fireworks would be best.

I really prefer Fireworks for slicing a layout. In fact I don't even know how to use the slice tool in photoshop and am forced to use the rectangle marquee tool.

Fireworks is way faster. I've used it since back in the Macromedia days -- before the MX versions even! :)
I only open Photoshop when I have to -- i.e. PSD won't open correctly in FW or need to modify/extract something from a PDF, etc.
