I've tried a couple of things, including setting:

-moz-outline: none;
outline: none;

but I still get a focus ring when I activate (i.e. click on) a button element the focus ring is visible.

Firefox 4 provides the :-moz-focusring pseudo selector but only in Firefox 4+.

Assuming you mean a button element rather than an input with type button, this should work:

button::-moz-focus-inner {
    border: none;
}

Replace button with input[type=button] if that's what you meant. Note that this will make your buttons smaller, you could do this to retain the current size:

button::-moz-focus-inner {
    border: 1px solid transparent;
}
