Safari allows via the attribute placeholder="Type something here" to show text into the value of a input field until it's clicked. But this works only for Safari. Is there a solution for all "modern" Browsers without tons of JS code?

Not really, there's some JS code here that adds the placeholder value in the other browsers, and it's all automated.
