I have a seemingly simple page layout in mind, but I don't know how to get it working. I have 3 piece of text - 2 short and 1 long. I want the short bits to appear on either side of the screen in fixed width columns and the long bit in the middle, with the width changing as the browser window is resized. The middle bit may have multiple lines and of course I'd like them all aligned to the left of first line. That is:

Left bit Middle bit, which may be quite long and may span Right bit
            multiple lines
Another line of the middle bit

How do I do this? Either divs or tables will do - I just want it to work!

That layout is often called the 'holy grail' layout. If you google for holy grail css you should come up with plenty of options to implement such a layout.

Layouts n.13 or n.14 at http://blog.html.it/layoutgala/ should do the trick for you.
